I have lost most of my teeth in my life because I smoked cigarettes for about 20 years (God and Jesus delivered me from this addiction in 2020 – praise them for this amazing miracle), but even though I have been visiting dentists all my life, the only advice I received was to brush my teeth twice a day and use a soft toothbrush. I will try to be more helpful and give you these valuable tips so that you could have healthy teeth:
Valuable Tips
- Use a water flosser to remove food residue from between the gums. However, use it only in the weakest stream. The best water flosser in my opinion is Google “Philips Sonicare flosser”.
- Mouthwash: it may contain fluoride, alcohol or be acidic. All of these are harmful to your teeth or your body, and it is difficult to find a mouthwash without these properties. That is why I prefer swishing my mouth with coconut oil instead of using a mouthwash, because it does not kill the good bacteria and it protects the teeth particularly well, and I think it is much better than mouthwashes because it is a natural alternative. When I swish with coconut oil, I find that I hardly have to clean my tongue anymore, whereas with chemical mouthwashes they were not as powerful.
How do I swish my mouth with coconut oil?
Put one tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and swish for 15-20 minutes. Afterwards, spit it all out into the bin (not the sink, to avoid clogging) and rinse your mouth with water. Then, brush your teeth (using a toothbrush other than your regular one) with toothpaste. Use only organic unrefined coconut oil. I noticed that coconut oil is now very expensive so I also have a cheaper option which is rinsing your mouth with sea salt : it is a simple and natural oral hygiene practice that can help reduce bacteria, soothe inflamed gums, and promote healing. Here’s how to do it safely and effectively:
How to Rinse Teeth with Sea Salt
Ingredients:
- 1 cup (about 240 ml) of warm water (not hot) – preferably filtered e.g. bottled water from supermarkets rather than tap water. The higher the quality of water the better.
- ½ teaspoon of sea salt (fine, non-iodized sea salt is ideal)
Steps:
- Warm the water:
- Heat water until it’s warm but comfortable to swish in your mouth. It shouldn’t be hot enough to burn.
- Add sea salt:
- Stir in ½ teaspoon of sea salt until it fully dissolves.
- Rinse and swish:
- Take a mouthful of the saltwater solution.
- Swish it around your mouth and between your teeth for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
- Focus on areas where your gums may be irritated or where you have tooth discomfort.
- Spit it out.
- Do not swallow the saltwater.
- Spit it into the sink and avoid eating or drinking for at least 10–15 minutes afterward.
How Often to Rinse:
- Once or twice a day is safe for most people.
- After dental work, you can use it up to 3 times a day (short-term).
- For daily use, once a day is enough to avoid drying out your mouth or affecting your enamel.
Things to Keep in Mind:
- Don’t overdo it — too much salt can irritate the mouth or dehydrate tissues.
- Sea salt and coconut oil rinses are a supplement, not a substitute for brushing.
- If you have high blood pressure or are on a sodium-restricted diet, consult your doctor before using salt rinses regularly.
How should I brush my teeth?
The most important thing is not to “scrape” horizontally, as this can recede the gums. Brushing should be done with the toothbrush tilted at a 45% angle and you need to move it in a circular motion, or brush vertically, but it is important to note that when doing it vertically, it is not advised to brush in both directions using the same force. For example, if you are brushing the upper teeth, you need to sweep downwards (away from the gums) to prevent food residues from getting under the gums. If you are brushing your lower teeth, you should sweep more strongly from the bottom up (away from the gums). In a nutshell, you need to “sweep” everything. Or as I mentioned, the other way is to rotate the toothbrush in a circular motion. Use a soft toothbrush. No need to use a lot of toothpaste – a pea-sized amount will do. The toothbrush should be replaced once every three months. Do not forget to brush the inner side of your teeth as well. By the way, when I say to hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle, this is what I mean :

Other tips
- If you drink coffee or green tea, use a straw to avoid staining or darkening your teeth.
- Xylitol gum: When you chew this gum, it produces saliva in your mouth, which remineralises your teeth and gets rid of bad bacteria. Chew it after meals, and do not drink water afterwards for at least 30-60 minutes. If you have pets, buy lozenges instead of chewing gum to avoid accidents. You can buy xylitol online.
- If your tooth enamel is damaged or for prevention, use a fluoride-free remineralising toothpaste – these can be found in specialist shops.
- Fluoride: Make sure your toothpaste or mouthwash is free of fluoride. Look for toothpaste with a “fluoride free” label. By the way, this substance is often found in mouthwashes.
- Hydrogen Peroxide / Baking Soda: these can be very powerful therapies, but they are not without risks – e.g. if you use too high a concentration of hydrogen peroxide you can damage enamel. Similarly, if you brush too hard with baking soda you can also damage enamel. It is better to use toothpastes that already contain these products than to play with the doses yourself, but make sure the toothpaste does not contain fluoride.
- Acidic pH: The acidic pH of food and drink is a major cause of dental problems. Avoid acidic products such as sugar, Coca-Cola, pizzas, burgers, processed foods, etc. Eat 80% alkaline foods such as green vegetables, fruits e.g. avocados, cucumbers, broccoli, etc.
- Completely eliminate sugar from your diet.
- Have a professional dental cleaning every 6 months with an oral hygienist. She will also check if any teeth need repair.
- Have a separate toothbrush for morning, day, and evening so that they can get dry. You can buy a special nano-silver toothbrush with silver particles at online specialist shops.
- Brush your teeth after each meal to avoid leaving food residue under your gums.
- There is controversial information on flossing – I find it much better to use a water flosser.
- Do not keep your toothbrushes in the bathroom because of dampness and other reasons
